Butler-Tarkington
Tucked away behind the grand houses along the west side of Meridian Street and just a few miles north of downtown, is Butler-Tarkington. Named for Butler University and famous former resident, Hoosier author Booth Tarkington, this quiet neighborhood features an array of beautiful homes- think gorgeous Tudor’s and classic Colonials- and is known for its attractive residential architecture.
View The Market ReportResidents appreciate the way Butler University inhabits parts of the neighborhood, complete with all of the expected college life - Greek Row and college town shopping - yet doesn’t disturb the quiet of the area. The unique amenities and experiences Butler brings are truly one-of-a-kind. Holcomb Observatory and Planetarium, one of the largest public observatories in the world, houses Indiana’s largest telescope and offers fulldome star shows regularly. The arts are thriving at Butler, and Clowes Memorial Hall hosts a star-studded list of talent and personalities, including touring Broadway shows. Beautiful Holcomb Gardens is a 20-acre oasis of tranquility that overlooks a manmade lake, and Hinkle Fieldhouse, at one time the largest basketball arena in the country, is a National Historic Landmark and a thrilling place to enjoy Indiana’s favorite pastime.
Children and adults alike enjoy Tarkington Park for its playground, parkour-friendly spaces, basketball and tennis courts, and onsite cafe, an outpost of Indiana basketball legend Tamika Catching’s Tea’s Me Cafe. The yearly Sausage Fest at St. Thomas Aquinas is always hopping and features selections from the century-old neighborhood mainstay, Kincaid’s Meat Market.
You’ll love the full service deli at the Illinois St. Food Emporium, and their grab & go selection is perennially popular. Hoagies & Hops offers up authentic Philly-style sandwiches and cheesesteaks, and while you might go to Byrne’s Grilled Pizza for their namesake pies, don’t sleep on their award-winning cocktails. The Swiss-inspired, apres-ski vibe of Chalet makes it an eclectic stop for a quick breakfast of coffee and a bialy (the humble, yet very tasty, cousin of a bagel) and a quaint place to while away an evening over charcuterie and raclette. The rustic-chic atmosphere of Meridian Bar & Restaurant foreshadows the well-executed upscale comfort food they offer, and the view from the patio, of the historic homes along Meridian Street, is unparalleled, as is the coziness of tête-à-tête by the fireplace.
